Low level laser therapy is a treatment working by a laser beam being applied to specific points directly on the skin or the mocous membrane. The energy from the low level laser beam is distributed over an area so large that only minimal or no sensation is felt by the patient during treatment. Low level laser theraphy has shown a number of effects at the cellular level. The practical clinical effects can be described as follows:

Low level laser therapy has a range of effects in the field of odontology. Generally the treatments are of short duration and effects are immediate or rapid. Low level laser therapy is used in dentistry for:
- Promoted healing after surgical procedures and extractions.
- Reduced post-operative pain and swelling after endodontic procedures, surgical procedures, extractions, etc.
- Toothache due to hypersensitive dentine or hyperaemia pulpae.
- Minor pain (and bleeding) during the procedure.
