Light activated disinfection is a new, fast and efficient method of destroying micro organisms such as bacteria and fungus.
How does it work?
A red light source is used in combination with a blue coloured photosensitive agent.
The agent has special properties, including the ability to bind itself to the surface of micro organisms and absorb the light energy.
The energy absorbed by the agent is released and turns oxygen molecules that are always present into into a very reactive form, called ROS ( = Reactive Oxygen Specimens). ROS reacts strongly and destroys instantaneously the bacteria. The treatment also disrupts the so called bio film, formed by the bacteria and protecting them from conventional therapy.
No side effects and pain free
There are no known side effects. The liquid/gel is harmless and the light source is a normal LED light. The light is very powerful, but harmless. As a patient, you hardly feel the treatment.
Use
Your dentist or dental hygienist will offer you treatment with light activated disinfection as a supplement to traditional treatment. It is used for endodontic treatment, periodontal treatment, periimplantitis, gingivitis and some cases of caries treatment.
What are the differences compared to traditional antibiotics ?
Bacteria can be treated with chemical disinfectants, such as Chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine in high concentration is harmful to gingiva and in low concentration ineffective.
Antibiotics (penicillin etc.) are only effective after several hours. Because the antibiotics are washed away, the effect of local treatment is limited.
There is a risk of bacteria developing resistance to the antibiotics.
Light activated disinfection works within seconds and has no risk of resistance.
